How to Reserve Child Seats for a Rental Car

A family car rental can be ready at Tirana Airport, at your hotel, or at a custom address, but the child seat should never be treated as an afterthought. Knowing how to reserve child seats before you confirm your vehicle helps avoid a last-minute mismatch between your child, your luggage, and the car you need for the trip.

A seat that is suitable for an infant is not the same as one for a preschooler or older child. Availability can also be limited during busy travel periods. The practical approach is simple: provide accurate child details early, select a vehicle with enough room, and get confirmation that the requested seat will be available at pickup.

How to reserve child seats with the right details

When booking your rental car, add a child seat request as early as possible. If the online booking form includes extras, select the number of seats needed and specify each child's age. If you are requesting a quote or arranging a custom pickup, include the same information in your message.

Age alone is helpful, but weight and height provide a better basis for choosing the right seat category. Share all three whenever possible. For example, an 18-month-old and a small 4-year-old may both need seats, but they may not need the same type of seat.

For each child, provide:

• Age, weight, and approximate height
• Whether the child uses a rear-facing seat, forward-facing seat, or booster
• The number of seats required
• Any special needs or fit concerns
• Your pickup date, time, and location

This information allows the rental team to prepare the appropriate equipment rather than making assumptions at the counter. It is particularly useful when you are arriving after a flight, traveling with more than one child, or collecting the vehicle outside Tirana.

Choose the seat category, not just the label

Child-seat names vary between countries and suppliers. A “baby seat,” “child seat,” or “booster” can cover different weight and height ranges. Ask which category is being reserved and whether it is suitable for your child’s current measurements.

In general, infants and younger toddlers need a rear-facing seat. Older toddlers and young children may use a forward-facing child seat with an internal harness, depending on their size and local requirements. A booster seat is intended for children who have outgrown a harnessed seat but are still too small for the vehicle’s seat belt to fit correctly.

Do not choose a booster simply because your child is close to the age often associated with one. The correct choice depends on height, weight, development, and belt fit. If you are uncertain, ask for guidance before the reservation is finalized.

Reserve early, especially for airport pickups

A rental car is often available in several categories, but child seats are separate pieces of equipment with limited daily inventory. Reserving one after you land may mean your preferred type is no longer available. This is most likely during summer, school breaks, holidays, and weekends with high airport traffic.

Booking early also gives you time to choose a car that works for your family. A compact hatchback can be practical for two adults and one small child with light luggage. It can become tight when you add a rear-facing seat, a stroller, and several suitcases. For longer road trips across Albania or the Balkans, an SUV, MPV, or van may be the more comfortable choice.

Think about the whole cabin, not only the number of passenger seats. Rear-facing child seats can take up significant space behind the front passenger seat. If a tall adult needs to sit in front, ask whether the requested seat is likely to fit comfortably in the selected vehicle category.

At Planet Rent a Car, sharing your route and family setup early helps match the vehicle and requested extras to the trip, whether you are picking up at Tirana Airport or arranging delivery elsewhere.

Confirm availability in writing

A request is not always the same as a confirmed reservation. Before your travel date, check that the booking confirmation clearly shows the number and type of child seats requested. If the confirmation only lists “extra equipment” or does not mention the seat at all, contact the rental provider and ask for clarification.

You should also confirm the cost. A transparent reservation should show whether the child seat is included, charged per day, charged per rental, or subject to any deposit. Ask before pickup so there are no unexpected charges when you are trying to leave the airport with tired children.

If your schedule changes, update the provider promptly. A delayed flight, a different arrival terminal, or a new delivery address can affect the handover. Keeping the rental team informed makes it easier to have the car and child seats ready when you arrive.

Ask about installation and vehicle compatibility

A reserved seat should be compatible with the car, but you should still inspect it before departure. Ask whether the seat will be installed for you or whether staff can show you the correct installation points. If you prefer to install it yourself, allow extra time at pickup.

Check the seat’s harness, buckle, straps, and adjustment positions. The seat should be stable after installation and should not move excessively at its base. Make sure the harness sits correctly on your child and is snug enough for safe travel. Bulky coats can interfere with harness fit, so remove them before securing the child.

Not every vehicle has the same anchor system or rear-seat layout. If you require ISOFIX/LATCH-style anchor points, request that specifically instead of assuming every car has them. Likewise, if you need three child seats across the rear row, say so before booking. That arrangement is possible in some larger vehicles but may not work safely or comfortably in a standard sedan.

Decide whether to rent a seat or bring your own

Bringing your own car seat can be a good choice when your child relies on a familiar model, has specific medical or comfort needs, or you want complete control over its history and condition. It also avoids learning a new seat’s adjustment system after a long flight.

Renting a child seat is often easier when you want to travel lighter, do not want to carry bulky equipment through airports, or need a seat only for part of the journey. For many families, it is the more convenient option, particularly when the rental provider can prepare it at the pickup location.

There is a trade-off. Your own seat may feel more familiar, but it must be approved for air travel if you plan to use it on the plane, and it still needs to fit correctly in the rental car. A rented seat saves luggage space, but you should inspect it and confirm its category before leaving. Neither option is automatically better for every trip.

Plan for road travel beyond the airport

Families visiting Albania often drive beyond Tirana – to the coast, mountain towns, relatives, or neighboring countries. That freedom is one of the main benefits of a rental car, but longer drives make a properly fitted child seat even more important.

Plan breaks around your child’s needs, keep water and essentials within reach, and avoid placing loose heavy items near the child seat. Luggage should be secured in the trunk or cargo area. If you are crossing borders, confirm your rental arrangements and travel route in advance, then keep your child-seat request tied to the same vehicle reservation.

Rules and enforcement can differ by country, so do not rely on what is familiar from home. Use an age- and size-appropriate restraint throughout the journey, not only on high-speed roads. A short transfer from the airport deserves the same care as a full-day drive.

Before you drive away

Take two minutes for a final check. Confirm that you received the number of seats requested, that each seat matches the child it is intended for, and that it is installed securely. Adjust the harness with your child seated in it, rather than assuming it was set correctly for the previous user.

If anything feels unclear, ask before you leave the pickup point. A reliable rental experience should give you room to resolve practical questions without pressure. The right child seat, confirmed early and checked at handover, lets your family start the trip focused on the road ahead rather than on a problem that could have been prevented.
